When you work on submissions its a blue sky project you have a brief of course but once your imagination creates something you can specify any yarn that works with it. (I always try and find three options for editors to pick from) It could be far more expensive than you would normally be able to afford or something you love and use all the time. How much do you need? Ten balls? Not a problem!
But it was a different story when it came to time to create something for me. I feel I deserve to make a little something for me after so much work I will never get to wear. Plus its a bit weird how little handmade stuff I have to wear given how long I have knit and crocheted. We don't have much cash at the moment so I can't justify going out and buying the yarn for a project so I resolved to work from my stash. This is not extensive.
I have 6 balls of this yarn
Its DK weight and you get 116m per ball. 696m is not a lot for a project. Especially when you have a 40" bust to knit around! What possessed me to only buy 6 balls I don't know, I can't even remember what this was intended for.
So as crochet generally uses more yarn than knitting I decide I will knit something. I have two options. I can either introduce one or more other colours to make a sweater but that is going to be rows or intarsia as anything with slipped stitches or stranding isn't going to save me much yarn in this, the main colour.
I wasn't feeling the stripes and as I want this to be my first full continental project (thinking what the heck?! See here for details) I didn't want to do intarsia especially as I'm not super confident at it.
So I think I'll make something smallish with what I have. I could probably get a shrug out of it but I didn't want to. So I think I will go with a simple short sleeve sweater. Something pretty straight forward made from the top down so if I run out of yarn it just is waist length not unfinished. I figure that if I have a wide enough neck this will be enough yarn for this.
So I liked this edging...
...from this book.
So I sketched this...
..swatched and did some scribbley sums
And cast on and did a few rows
And I don't like it. :-(
So its back to the drawing board. I think what I want is something really simple in stocking stitch with a garter stitch edging and a few little gathers mid neckline and on each sleeve and for the sleeves to pinch back in a bit. Something like this
So I'm off to rip it out now and start again. At least the sums are more or less done to start with.
Half of me thinks I should make something a bit flashier, more challenging, more interesting to knit: better to show off I guess. But this is what I want to wear and I think I'm in the mood for an easy knit. Plus flashy often means more yarn...
